about

You Were the One - Story

It would be handy to have a crystal ball. To have the ability, here and there, to take a look ahead; to peer out from this moment along the unfolding trajectory of our lives and to see how the decisions we make ripple out into differing versions of our future selves. It would be helpful to be able to see the pitfalls clearly; to be able to stare into temptation’s hypnotic gaze and say “I see you, and I know that you are false.”

But as it is, it’s not the dreamy and malleable future that we see clearly, but the weighty, immovable past. It’s all too easy to look back with indulgence. To judge the past too harshly, as if that previous incarnation of ourselves had the knowledge and wisdom that we have only now gained through making all of those youthful mistakes. Through those painful moments in which we stared into temptation’s hypnotic gaze and heard our lips whisper, “yes”.

Sometimes a decision falls like a giant stone into the fields of our lives. We think, at first, that the elements of time will dissolve it away. But after one decade has passed… maybe two decades… and we see it looking like the same damn rock that dropped from the heavens so many years ago, we understand that time might be taking it away, but the process is slow and the object is large. So we learn to draw that hard, heavy stone into ourselves. We learn how to incorporate it, into the garden of our lives.

Sometimes, when we’re walking through that broad field of the past that grows and expands with each passing moment, we catch a knee on that jagged stone and it tears us open again. We wonder why we didn’t understand that the freedom we demanded was just loneliness in the end. We kick at that rock like a child in rage and we hurt ourselves all over again. So we bandage up and leave it there. We turn our back and walk away from it.

And we think “It would be handy to have a crystal ball.”

lyrics

You Were the One - Lyrics

People don’t know what they got
‘till the lights go down on them
But if I could have seen
Just a little ways ahead
Maybe I’d still be your friend

So as this day falls
And another one comes
I still feel the same
Still you were the one
Still you were the one

Why do I decide that it’s wrong
Just to free myself?
So now I’m free to be lonesome
And free to be sad
Thinkin’ bout the good times we had

They say time is a friend
But time won’t seem to help me to mend
Oh what a fool I have been

So as this day falls
And another one comes
I still feel the same
Still you were the one
Still you were the one
